Basic positions

These are basic (Common) "Heeling" positions for a dog to maintain in relation to the handler who may be

  • stationary,

  • moving forwards,

  • sideways left,

  • sideways right or

  • backwards.

These positions are often referred to by different names.

Heel
Orientation Right-to left
Common cue: "Heel"

The dog is on the left hand side of the handler. Part of the dog between the ears and shoulder is next to and parallel to the outside of the handler's left leg, or left pant's seam, both facing forwards.

Heel Reversed
Orientation Left-to Left
Suggested cue: "Meet"

Part of the dog between the ears and shoulder is next to and parallel to the outside of the handler's left leg, or left pant's seam. The dog is facing the handler.

 

Side
Orientation Left-to right
Common cue: "Side"

The dog is on the right hand side of the handler. Part of the dog between the ears and shoulder is next to and parallel to the outside of the handler's right leg, or right pant's seam, both facing forwards.

Side Reversed
Orientation Right-to right
Suggested cue: "Team"

Part of the dog between the ears and shoulder is next to and parallel to the outside of the handler's right leg, or right pant's seam, dog is facing backwards.

Front
Orientation Face-to front
Common cue: "Front"


Dog is centered in front of the handler, facing the handler.

Front Reversed
Orientation Back-to front
Suggested cue: "Ahead"

Dog is centered in front of the handler with his back to the handler. Both are facing forwards.
 

Front, right-to
Orientation Right-to front
Suggested cue: "File" (Pro file)

Dog has his right side centered and perpendicular to the front of the handler. The handler is facing forwards and the dog is facing the handler's right.

Front, left-to
Orientation Left-to front
Suggested cue: "Pro" (Pro file)

Dog has his left side centered and perpendicular to the front of the handler. The handler is facing forwards and the dog is facing the handler's left.

Rear
Orientation Face-to back
Suggested cue: "Behind, Follow"

Dog is centered behind the handler facing the back of the handler. Handler and dog are both facing forwards.
 

Rear Reversed
Orientation Back-to back
Suggested cue: "Tail, BB"
(BB - pronounced BeeBee)

Dog is centered behind the handler with his back to the handler. The handler is facing forwards and the dog is facing backwards.
 

Rear, right-to
Orientation Right-to back
Suggested cue: "Ter" (Af ter)

Dog has his right side centered and perpendicular to the back of the handler. The handler is facing forwards and the dog is facing the handler's left.

Rear, left-to
Orientation Left-to back
Suggested cue: "Aft" (Aft er)

Dog has his left side centered and perpendicular to the back of the handler. The handler is facing forwards and the dog is facing the handler's right.
